Jon Pyzel grew up in Santa Barbara, California, started surfing in high school, and quickly found himself deeply immersed in it. Matt Moore began shaping his boards and brought him on board. Matt always helped explain the ideas and principles of surfboard design and let Jon watch him shape all of his boards.
After traveling to surf, Jon realized he wanted better waves, warmer waters, and a permanent move to Oahu's North Shore in 1992. There, he found work repairing surfboards, and Jon quickly learned the ropes, working as a wrapper and laminator. He quickly connected with master shaper Jeff Bushman, who provided guidance, input, and enthusiasm. Eventually, Jeff gave Jon a job as his groomer, and that was the beginning of his coaching career.
A turning point came a few years later, in 1998. Alex Florence approached Jon about making a board for his oldest son, John John, who was 5 years old at the time. From then on, Jon and John John worked together to redefine what was possible for Grom surfing. Fast forward almost 20 years, and John John Florence is the 2016 World Champion, considered the greatest living surfer, while riding Pyzel surfboards.
When we think about our company today, we consider JJF as one of the cornerstones of our success, not only for his incredible navigational skills, but also for his loyalty, humble attitude, gratitude, and positive outlook on life.
We didn't start all this to become a giant company, releasing as many "units" as we could. We started it because we love surfing and everything that comes with it: traveling to new lands, making great friends, and making adventures. But above all, we started this because we love surfboards!
Today, Pyzel Surfboards has grown into an international business but is still family-run. Jon and his wife, Dali, live on the beach in Hawaii with their two daughters and help run the Pyzel Surfboards factories on the North Shore and in Oceanside, CA. We take pride in every board we build and go to great lengths to ensure our customers get exactly the right board for what they want to do. We have licensees in seven countries around the world, and Jon has offices in Australia, Europe, Brazil, Japan, Indonesia, South America, and California.
Over the years, Pyzel boards have been ridden by many of the world's best surfers, including:
John John Florence, Kelly Slater, Mark Healey, Jack Freestone, Michel Bourez, Jadson Andre, Nathan Florence, Koa Rothman, Koa Smith, Fredrico Morais, Matt Archbold, Billy Kemper and many more.
